나츠메는 할머니로부터 요괴를 보는 능력을 물려받아 항상 외톨이로 지내왔습니다. 할머니의 고향으로 이사 온 후, 우연히 마네키네코 상에 갇혀 있던 요괴를 풀어주게 되면서 할머니의 '우정 수첩'에 대해 알게 됩니다. 이 수첩에는 할머니가 제압한 요괴들의 이름이 적혀 있으며, 소유자는 수첩에 적힌 요괴들을 조종할 수 있습니다. 그 이후로 요괴들은 자신의 이름을 되찾거나 우정 수첩을 차지하기 위해 매일 그를 찾아오게 됩니다.
